True Blood Season 1 Review!

The season finale of True Blood was this past Sunday, appropriately during the weekend of Twilight insanity. If you're looking for "vampire romance" without the over-cheesed lines, then I suggest you tune into True Blood. The show is based on the Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries and follows the life of Sookie Stackhouse in her small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. In this fictional world, the Japanese (of course!) have created a synthetic blood product called "TruBlood" that vampires can consume as an alternative to humans. Slowly they've been coming out and vampires and humans have been able to live together. Of course there are those who enjoy the real thing - why have tofu when you can have steak?

Ever since she was young, Sookie has had the ability to hear people's thoughts. She's learned to tune them out over the years but this takes effort. Then one night she meets Bill Compton a 175 year-old vampire whose thoughts she can't hear. She's immediately intrigued and ends up falling in love with him. Throughout the show she learns more about vampires, about Bill and some strange things that start to happen in her small town.

Okay so that was the overview now on to the review – and just a warning to the True Blood virgins, there will be spoilers.  Except I guess not really if you've already read the books...

The entire series was great, but the finale was awesome! Admittedly I haven't read the books so this may be why I was that much more surprised that Rene turned out to be the killer. I actually thought it was going to be Hoyt – there's something I don't trust about a grown man who lives with his mom. I was a bit disappointed Grandma Stackhouse's death was just a case of wrong place/wrong time since this show is so sexually charged they might was well let Gran get it on too. Hey, I'm just saying... everyone's got needs. And she seems hip and open enough to do it. I watch this show on the subway and there are so many nudity and sex scenes on this show that I have to cover the screen so people don't think I'm a huge perv for watching porn on the TTC.

Sam is a dog/shape shifter! I thought I was just paranoid because there were werewolves in Twilight so I thought there had be canines in this too. He does kind of look like a dog, he was sniffing Dawn's sheets when she was dead and he barked in his sleep. So he was either a dog or just a creeper. He usually shifts into Lassie since that's supposed to symbolize his caring and innocent nature, but is he really that innocent if he's running away with a garbage bag full of cash? Sam needs to choose to shift into a tougher dog, like a Rottweiler or a Pit-bull.

What I love about this show is that although vampires are typically seen as monsters (and some of them really are), it's actually the humans who are hurting and killing each other through their prejudices and own violent nature. In the pilot episode, Sookie gets the sh&t kicked out of her by two rednecks and in the finale we see that Rene was the killer all along. Not to mention comments about the AIDs burger, which Lafayette (what a fierce b&tch) set straight. The political issues they face on the show are a mirrored reflection of what's going on in our world today – let's hope that Bill and Sookie can get married before Proposition 8 gets passed in Bon Temps too.

In true True Blood fashion, the show ends with multiple cliff-hangers. Is Lafayette the body in Andy's car? Why is Sam running away with a bag full of cash? Who/what is Maryann? What's going to happen when Sookie meets Jessica and realizes that Bill is her maker? All this to come in season 2!

And did you know that Amy was played by Lizzy Caplan who played Janis Ian in Mean Girls? No wonder she looked so familiar eh? That just made the show that much more awesome!

i can understand the hate - at first i couldn't get past the accents, anna paquin's gap and the ridiculousness of the vampires but after awhile it's kinda fun & i started to like it.

if twilight can be cheesy then this can be ridiculous ;) lol
