I definitely enjoyed Season 2 of The Tudors more than Season 1. I will quickly explain why. Season 1 follows the plotting of Anne Boleyn (and her family) to get to the throne. There's a lot of sex, intrigue, and even though you know the historical aspect, you still wonder if King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn will ever get together. It's almost like a soap opera, which I don't like.
Season 2 is all about Anne Boleyn getting to the throne than getting thrown off. Once King Henry VIII figures out he was being toyed with for power, position and money, he fights back big time. He chops off her head. But along with her head, also goes Thomas More's head, the king's beloved mentor and friend. There's a lot of sad times in Season 2, the king's problems start becoming more intense, who can he actually trust? As an audience, I just start feeling sorry for him, who can he trust? And, who can Anne Boleyn trust? Absolutely nobody either. She's so desperate to have a boy, to prove herself worthy, and her family relies solely on her position. You look at her with disgust, disapproval and despair at the same time.
Despite the historical inaccuracies, age descrepancy etc, I think you do get a feel for the intense competition of this time period. Women must have boys. Women must be sexually virtuous. Women must be this and that. All the pressure women endured during that time makes me very glad and happy that I exist in this day and age, not without its flaws of course. Equally, men had great pressure to perform as well. But, they had more opportunities to breathe than women.
